We had a great turnout for our first run of It’s Your Call, Victoria!
Fifty-one Unit 431 members participated in this inaugural event. Two participants aced the problems, tying for first place with a perfect score of 500. Read all about it here.
Since ACBL has already published the December problems, I decided to make them available on our website also. You can find them right here. Deadline for submission is December 17 but you can play anytime starting now.
Most Victoria players are familiar with “It’s Your Call”, the popular bidding quiz found each month in the ACBL Bridge Bulletin. If you’re not, open any recent Bridge Bulletin at page 40 to see what it’s all about.
We’ve set up a local version of the game, which can be played directly from our website, by clicking here: www.bridgevictoria.ca/itsyourcall. You can also find it under “Members” in the top menu.
It’s the same game, the only difference being that instead of competing against all of North America, you only play against other ACBL Unit 431 (Victoria and the Gulf Island) players, which greatly improves your chances of winning. And did we mention that the winner gets an actual tangible prize!
The deadline for submission of results is November 18, 2016. You can play as many times as you wish before then, however only the last set of bids you submit will be considered when results are compiled.
Unit 431’s annual Ace of Spades Tournament was held on Saturday, October 22, at St Aidan’s Church.
Results should soon be posted on ACBL’s Tournament page. Meanwhile you can find them on our Tournament Results page.
Winners of the Pairs event were: Gina Curran and Susan Breiddal, playing N/S; Norman Prelypchan and Peter Bousfield playing E/W.
The winning team in the afternoon game was that of Helen Lindholm, Jane Danzo, Sharon Shalinsky and Heather Cozens.
Congratulations to all and many thanks to the Tournament Chairs, Peggy Pepper and Nancy Adrian and the Tournament Director, Merv Adey for making this a successful and enjoyable event.
If you currently hold fewer than 200 master points, this is your chance to win some valuable silver points. Come and play in Unit 431’s annual Ace of Spades Tournament this Saturday, October 22, at St Aidan’s Church, 3703 St. Aidan’s Street, Victoria, BC.
No partner? No problem! Just call or email one of the co-chairs, Peg or Nancy (details in flyer) who will find you someone to play with.
For complete information, download the Ace of Spades Flyer.
The Erin Berry is the fall Rookie-Master Game. The event is named in memory of Erin Berry, a gifted student and bridge player who was tragically killed in a car accident on January 30, 1998, three days before her 17th birthday.
The games are run using computer hands so that players across the country play the same deals, and printed hand analyses, prepared by top Canadian players, are provided. The pair with the best percentage score in Canada is declared National Winners and receives a trophy. The pairs with the top percentage score in each Zone receive a plaque. All club winners receive certificates.
A “Rookie” is considered to be a player without much experience at playing duplicate bridge. Although we use a masterpoint cut off of 50, we are really intending that the player be fairly new to the game of duplicate bridge. Players that have let their ACBL membership lapse or have not been remitting master points for recording, although below the 50 master point level, do not necessarily fit the definition of “rookie”. Club managers or game directors may prohibit a pair from playing in this game, if they feel that the partnership does not include a player that fits the definition of a “Rookie”.
NEXT ERIN BERRY ROOKIE-MASTER GAME October 18, 2016 at 7:30 pm
Venue: St Aidan’s Church, 3703 St Aidan’s Street.
Cost is $8.50 for rookies; masters play free!
Director and partnership: Roy Sadd, 250-812-1615.
At least one member of each partnership must have fewer than 50 master points.
The tournament begins at 1 pm on Thursday September 8 at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. For full information on the tournament schedule and accommodations, see the flyer.

Results will be posted on ACBL Live within one hour of each game’s end. Note that results for two-session games on Friday and Saturday will not be up until after the second session is completed. You can sign up on ACBL to receive instant notification of your results via email or text message (see below).
Victoria area players are encouraged to bring some goodies for the hospitality table (baked goods or snacks, sweet or savoury) but nothing sticky please so as not to gum up the playing cards.

The September 2016 electronic edition of the Bridge Buzz is posted on the Bridge Buzz page.
ACBL has recently announced a ruling change which makes it legal to open 1NT with a singleton, but with some restrictions:
“A notrump opening or overcall is natural if, by agreement, it contains no void, at most one singleton which must be the A, K or Q and no more than two doubletons. If the hand contains a singleton, it may have no doubleton.”
The full article can be found on ACBL’s site.
The June 2016 edition of the Bridge Buzz is now available on the (you guessed it) Bridge Buzz page.

This year marks the 4th annual The Longest Day fundraising event supporting Alzheimer’s disease care and research. Held on Monday, June 20, 2016, the longest day of the year, this event symbolizes the difficult journey of those living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.
The four bridge clubs of Unit 431 have chosen to participate in the Trump Alzheimer’s Contré event and play bridge in support of our local Alzheimer Society. It is faster and easier than ever to support this great cause by making your tax-deductible donation online using this link: Victoria Area Bridge Clubs Alzheimer Donation. By making a donation you are helping the Alzheimer Society provide much needed programs and services for Canadians affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and advance the search for the cause and cure. Whatever you can give will help – it all adds up! And all funds collected will be used in BC. The Victoria area bridge clubs greatly appreciate your support.
On this day, bridge games will be held at the following venues:
Congratulations to Cecelia Wilson and Heather Davies the overall winners at the 99’er Rookie Game on Sunday May 22, with a score of 59.52%.
Although it was a long weekend we still had nine full tables in play; more than usual for the May Rookie Game. It was wonderful to see everyone having a good time, particularly the players from the D-light game.
