- [A well-attended AGM!](https://bridgevictoria.ca/a-well-attended-agm/): On February 21, 2025, Unit 431 held its first face-to-face Annual General Meeting since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. 36 members gathered at the Strawberry Vale & District Community Club for the business meeting and elections, followed by an enjoyable, complimentary individual movement bridge game, and pizza. 2024 new Life Masters were announced, and 2024 Helen Shanbrom Ace of Clubs certificates were presented to those winners present. All Ace of Clubs and Mini-McKenney winners can be found here, and the remaining certificates will be distributed when received. - [Unit Mentor Game Cancelled](https://bridgevictoria.ca/unit-mentor-game-cancelled/): Terry Foster and Heather Erskine, long-term organizers of the monthly Unit Mentor Game are cancelling the game due to low turnout. Here is the message they sent to their participants: After going through many game cancellations (due to low game registrations) in the last several months, we have decided to cancel the monthly Unit 431 Mentor Games until further notice. This decision does not affect Mike’s game and he will continue on as normal. We have enjoyed getting to know and work with you all over the past 8 years and we wish you all the best going forward. - [Bridge Bulletin contest - we have a winner!](https://bridgevictoria.ca/bridge-bulletin-contest-we-have-a-winner/): Last month’s Bridge Bulletin featured two smiling Victoria bridge players. Our little contest asked you to name them.  A total of 616 players received the invitation (also posted on our website), with 300 actually opening the email. Of these, 21 accepted the challenge and sent in their answer. 15 gave the correct answer, which can be found on page 25 of the October Bridge Bulletin. The featured players are Jill Plasteras and Madeleine Tremblay, part of the runners-up in the 0-2500 Mini-Spingold KO Teams. The winner, drawn randomly from the correct results is Jim Brackenbury. - [Halloween at VBC](https://bridgevictoria.ca/halloween-at-vbc/): Participants at Thursday’s VBC game were invited to dress up in their Halloween costumes and several took up the challenge. The ghostly winners for best costume were Margaret Skinner and Nicole Dupuis, who received a dinner gift card from Victoria Pub Company, valid at any of their four pubs, Bard & Banker, Irish Times, Penny Farthing, Vis-a-Vis.

- [Embrace ACBL's new convention card!](https://bridgevictoria.ca/embrace-acbls-new-convention-card/): ACBL’s new convention card was introduced over a year ago, in the March 2022 Bridge Bulletin. It’s actually much better than the previous one and takes into account the recent changes in alert and announcement procedures. However, most of us, myself included, haven’t started using it yet. - [Grand Life Master Day at Monterey](https://bridgevictoria.ca/grand-life-master-day-at-monterey/): The day that Sandra Fraser attained the rank of Grand Life Master (GLM) there were 3 other GLMs playing at the Monterey Bridge Club in Victoria, BC to help her celebrate.   All are Canadian Champions! Sandra Fraser: Won a North American Bridge Championship title and is a 5 time 2nd place winner Won the 2019 Canadian Mixed Team Championship (CMTC) along with husband Doug Fraser, Jim & Constance McAvoy, and Rhonda Foster & Gerry McCully, all from Victoria, BC Represented Canada with the above team at the World Mixed Team Championships in China, September 2019 Victoria’s bridge scene is vibrant. 
- [Great turnout for the Ace of Hearts!](https://bridgevictoria.ca/great-turnout-for-the-ace-of-hearts/): The Ace of Hearts Sectional Tournament for players with fewer than 300 points was held on Saturday February 25. This was a 2-session tournament. Participation was excellent with 11 tables in the morning and 12 in the afternoon. The overall morning winners were Natalie Stevens and Susan DeGryp who both garnered 2.17 Silver Masterpoints.         Anne Callon and Sophie Watts won the afternoon with 2.27 Silvers.   Playing consistently in both morning and afternoon games, John Heck and Shiela Wansbrough came away with the biggest haul of 2.76 Silvers. - [Duncan Sectional, March 16-18](https://bridgevictoria.ca/duncan-sectional-march-16-18/): The Duncan Sectional will be held March 16-18 2023 (Thursday through Saturday) at Eagles Hall, 2965 Boys Rd, Duncan (south end, just before the bridges). - [Matt Smith's Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony](https://bridgevictoria.ca/matt-smiths-hall-of-fame-induction-ceremony/): Our favourite director, Matt Smith (now retired), was inducted into ACBL’s Hall of Fame in 2020. However, because of Covid, the ceremony was only held recently on November 28, 2022. Here’s a Youtube video of the event.
- [Kirkwood trophy - local winners](https://bridgevictoria.ca/kirkwood-trophy-local-winners/): As most Victoria players know, the Kirkwood Trophy is awarded to the District 19 resident who wins the most masterpoints at District regionals in a calendar year. Our four district regionals this year were Leavenworth, Penticton, Lynnwood and Whistler. - [Victoria players out in force at Whistler](https://bridgevictoria.ca/victoria-players-out-in-force-at-whistler/): The Whistler Regional ran from November 3-9 and was well-attended by Victoria players. Twenty-nine of us made the trip, braving snow and ice on the way up. The Michael Hargreaves/Gordon McOrmond partnership came in second overall, each garnering 120.49 MPs. The complete list of Victoria players and their score is shown at the bottom of this page. With a substantial number (21) of up-island players also showing up to do battle,  Vancouver Island was very well represented as shown in the pie chart below.  
- [Seaside wrap-up](https://bridgevictoria.ca/seaside-wrap-up/): The Oregon Coast Regional in Seaside is always a popular destination for Victoria bridge players. This year was no exception with eighteen of us making the trip south. Another six players from up island were also present. Sandra and Doug Fraser scored big with 66 MPs, coming in 24th and 25th out of a field of 682 players. Here are the scores and ranks of all Victoria attendees.

- [D-lightful to be back!](https://bridgevictoria.ca/d-liteful-to-be-back/): Welcome back to Duplicate Light, a weekly game where social bridge players are gently introduced to the art, mechanisms and protocols of duplicate bridge. Participants will become familiar with using bidding boxes, numbered pre-dealt decks in boards, electronic registration of scores, and they will get to know a number of other keen players. Games will be held Tuesdays, starting October 25, at noon, at the Monterey Rec Centre, 1442 Monterey Avenue. We will be in a side room next to an open duplicate game, and we will play about 18 hands at a comfortable rate. The cost is $5 per
- [Very successful Victoria Fall Sectional!](https://bridgevictoria.ca/very-successful-victoria-fall-regional/): After 3 years, Unit 431 returned to tournament play with the Victoria Fall Sectional on September 16 to 18 at the Mary Winspear Centre. The tournament was very successful thanks to the team of volunteers who worked to organize and pull off the event. Kudos are also due to Tournament Director Bruce McIntyre who masterfully ran the three-day sectional which attracted higher than expected turnout. It was great to bring together our local players and welcome out of town visitors from up-island, the mainland and the US. The final tally for the weekend of 189 tables was 71% of the

- [Penticton Regional Roundup](https://bridgevictoria.ca/penticton-regional-roundup/): The Penticton Regional Tournament was held last week, from June 13 to 19. You can read all about it on ACBL District 19’s website. With respect to our little island, 48 players from the Victoria area (Unit 431) participated in the tournament, with another 42 coming from up-island (Unit 429), for a total of about 12% of attendees. Perennial tournament chair Marv Norden was happy with the turnout (table count of 1655.5), a bit over 50% of 2019’s. He also reported five cases of Covid, one of which from Victoria. - [Victoria team strikes gold in Leavenworth](https://bridgevictoria.ca/victoria-team-strikes-gold-in-leavenworth/): Leavenworth, Wa successfully reinvented itself as a Bavarian town in the 1960’s after logging petered out and the railroad moved out of town. It was never known as a mining town, yet there’s gold to be found in them thar hills and our four plucky miners struck the mother lode! Congratulations to Gail Richardson, Danielle Goulet, Jill Plasteras and Madeleine Tremblay for their win in the Edelweiss Knockout which gave them 14.58 gold points. Also note that the resumption of face-to-face bridge at Monterey Bridge Club, initially planned for September 11, has been postponed until November 2. - [A successful CNIB fundraiser](https://bridgevictoria.ca/a-successful-cnib-fundraiser/): Thank you all Victoria bridge players who participated in CNIB’s fundraising bridge game, Bridging Barriers Charity Game, a couple of weeks ago. You really made a difference as you can see from the following numbers. There were 150 participants between the online auction and bridge game. Of these, 55 played in the bridge game. The total number of players who were based on Vancouver Island was 36, with 20 from Victoria specifically. Overall, the event raised $10,790.00.
